After partnering with Norfolk Southern in 2018 to renovate the Goode Building, turnerboone was thrilled for the opportunity to outfit the new Atlanta headquarters. Since 1982, Norfolk Southern’s headquarters was located in Virginia while their operations and technology leadership were here in Georgia. To be more agile and collaborative, the decision was made to come together in a central location.  

The new headquarters consists of two towers encompassing 750,000 square feet in the heart of Midtown Atlanta. The high-performance space provides 3,100 employees a variety of individual and shared workspaces in a flexible and collaborative environment. Norfolk Southern focused on sustainability and employee health and wellness when designing their new headquarters. To achieve their goals, they included rooftop gardens, a comprehensive fitness center, on-site childcare, a vibrant dining facility, and much more.

turnerboone worked in lock step with HOK to bring Norfolk Southern’s design-forward vision to life. Our team utilized Bluebeam to design in real time which greatly reduced communication delays. Teams were able to see when specifications were updated and make changes instantly. Christine Ausman, turnerboone Director of Account Management, describes the design process, “It was a really fun, but challenging, process. We wanted to make every part and piece, and each nut and bolt, fit just the way that it should. We knew this client was focused on the details and we wanted it to be absolutely perfect.”

To ensure a smooth and efficient procurement, delivery, and installation experience, turnerboone began planning over two years before our team stepped foot on the job site. As the sole furniture partner installing over 30 floors of furniture simultaneously, we knew we had a great responsibility on our shoulders, but also an opportunity to shape an exceptional client experience. Our installation team coordinated directly with the general contractor to eliminate potential delays. We implemented an install strategy that reduced manpower requirements by having the same crew deliver and install each truckload. Each crew would sort, deliver, and stage the product and then return the next day for installation. This proved to be extremely successful in reducing overlap time for a new team to brought up to speed. Tara O’Gorman, turnerboone President, explains the installation process, “We never approached the project in terms of thinking only about what it will take for us to install the furniture. We have always approached it in terms of what will it take for us to be the best partner to the entire construction and Norfolk Southern team. It’s been incredible to see everyone work together. It’s truly one of the smoothest projects I have ever been a part of.”

Every workstation was outfitted with top-of-the-line ergonomic features including height adjustable desks, task chairs, and dual monitor arms to give their employees an unmatched experience.
